Rising 9th Graders - Summer Reading 2023
REQUIRED READING:
The EHHS English teachers welcome you to 9th Grade!
You may choose between either The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho or Speak by
Laurie Halse Anderson to read over the summer.
During the second week of school, students will be taking an assessment on
their chosen novel.
Below is a brief synopsis of each book.
The Alchemist is a classic novel in which a boy named
Santiago embarks on a spiritual journey, seeking treasure
in the Egyptian pyramids after having a recurring dream
about it. On the way he meets mentors, falls in love, and
most importantly, learns the true importance of who he is
and how to improve himself.
Speak centers on a character who gains the strength to
overcome her trauma. The rape she endured troubles
Melinda as she struggles with wanting to repress the
memory of the event, while simultaneously desiring to
speak about it
