Final Exam Retakes / Senior Exam Exemptions

If a student has a passing average before the final exam, the student has an option to retake the assessment once if the grade would result in course failure. If the final assessment is a state mandated EOC assessment that causes the student to fail the class, the EOC course grade stands.

Seniors may be exempt from their final exam provided they have an 85 average for the course, acceptable behavior, no more than 3 absences for the semester (for a semester-long course) or 6 absences for the year (for a year-long course), and the course is not one for which there is a state mandated exam.

• This policy will apply to ALL absences (Excused or Unexcused, except school activities and religious holidays) in determining senior exam exemptions for each course

• Exemptions only apply to FINAL exams given at the end of the 1st and 2nd semesters, not 1st or 3rd quarter (9 week) exams or Mid-Term exams (for year-long classes). The purpose of this policy is to reward seniors at the end of four years for meeting academic success as well as behavioral / attendance criteria.

• Students enrolled in End of Course, Dual Enrollment, or Advanced Placement courses will NOT be exempt from completing those exams. However, if a student does not take the AP exam, he will be required to complete a teacher-made final exam. Students enrolled in AP Language / Composition or AP U.S. History courses are NOT required to take the EOC exam for that course.

• Point of Clarification: In determining whether “Seniors may be exempt from their final exam provided they have an 85 average for the course...” o For a year-long course, the 3rd and 4th Quarters will be averaged together to determine whether a senior has an 85 average for the course leading up to the final exam. For a semester-long course, the 1st and 2nd Quarters (or 3rd and 4th Quarters for an S2 course) will be averaged together to determine whether a senior has an 85 average for the course leading up to the final exam.
